Step Two - Surrender!

During the first meditation, we discussed the Hope we found. 'Hope' that we can move past our own powerlessness to change. 'Hope' that we will grow beyond our self-centered fears, our regret from the past, our dread of the future. If we hope to have any real change, we must learn to Surrender. If we are going to Surrender, we must come to believe in something worth Surrendering to. Something capable of taking power away from our obsessions, our anxieties, our griefs, and our depressions.

Ready for week two?

Find a quiet spot, turn off your cell phone. If you have headphones, put them on. (There something about isolating sound that makes it more effective.) Don't worry about how focused you are, how deep you go, or even how quiet (or loud) your mind is. Simply sit up straight (or lie down if you prefer) relax and listen. Do your best to do this every day for a full week.

Assignments for this Meditation:

  • Try to set a regular time each day to practice this meditation.
  • Practice this meditation each day for one week before moving to the next.
  • In your meditation notebook, again draw a line down the middle of the pages.
  • Go over your list from the last meditation. Begin to realize that those items you are both powerless over and that are making your life unmanageable. Those are your Insanities, your damaging patterns.
  • This time on the left side, write out a different way of handling or viewing each of your insanities. In other words, what would make those insanities sane?
  • Once you have the possible different outcomes written out, go back and on the right side, define what power you can believe in that would be capable of changing those insanities.
  • Remember and repeat the mantra often, "I Surrender Self-Will."
  • Go to the Ask it Basket and participate in the community. Allow us to help guide you through these exercises. But by no means should you share anything that you are uncomfortable sharing.
